  • load capacity and resistance to rocking;
  • what combustible structure exists underneath; and

Firebrick, concrete, or a listed industrial surface may be useful components, but adding a tile or loose board on top of a combustible, unstable bench does not automatically qualify the whole assembly. The complete support path matters.

Ventilation must not destabilize the pour

Ventilation is necessary when the process can release metal fumes, oxides, flux products, coating decomposition products, or mold emissions. NIOSH describes engineering controls and local exhaust as core methods for foundry and hot-metal contaminants.

However, an improvised fan that blows across the operator, molten surface, or mold can redirect contaminants and disturb the work area. A ventilation professional should design capture for the source and discharge location. Keep ducts and hoods out of the crucible lift path, and verify that the system does not pull rain, debris, or uncontrolled air across the process.

Outdoor operation also needs a real station: dry weather, controlled wind, suitable power, restricted access, stable ground, and a protected cooldown area. “Outside” does not make wet tools or a sloped patio safe.

Perform a cold layout trial

Before the first powered heat:

  1. Place the exact furnace on the proposed surface.
  2. Load a cold substitute mass that represents the planned working load without using liquid.
  3. Practice tong engagement, vertical lift, turn, route, and mold approach.
  4. Check knuckle, elbow, lid, shelf, hood, and cord conflicts.
  5. Confirm the operator can retreat without backing into an obstacle.
  6. Mark equipment positions so the route can be reproduced.
